so, this here space started out more than a year ago as a way to get the word out about our little gallery and what we were doing down there.
now, it's really not so much that, anymore.
ok, it's not that at all.

it's my place to write down things as they are happening to us. a way for me to stop and think and notice all the good and not so good things that make up our particular corner of the world.

but...

something else happened along the way. i fell in love with taking pictures. and while i still firmly have both feet planted in the amateur camp, it gives me so much pleasure to see and record our life in this way. and what i needed most was, frankly, a hobby.

because it wasn't going to be so good, if it kept on that the only "hobby" i had was our house and our children and all the toil and worry that comes with both of those beloved things.

i've been experimenting with film the last couple of months, with limited success. not least of all because it takes more money and time than i have at my disposal. and tim seems to think that it's a waste of effort, as well. don't hold this against him, but he's really sure that digital is the only way to go.

i was not so sure. then i got my first black and white roll back, and it was intriguing. then i got my second roll back of black and white, and it was depressing. i was done. won over to tim's side.

then, i got my first color roll back, and wow. there is something about the texture and the color and the depth that i find too compelling to turn my back on without a few more rounds of trial and error.

i'm turning to you, my friends. my very talented friends, to help me in whatever way you can. any thoughts on film? do you develop your own, or do you have to drive to the nearest last standing vestige of film developing, as i do? any tips on scanning film onto flickr? because i think in the end a poorly scanned photo can defeat the whole purpose.

and what is the whole purpose?

i know we are all too busy right now for this, but if you are out there, and you shoot film, and you have any thing at all to say to me on the subject, i would be very appreciative.

snow, snow, snow here! so beautiful out, and cozy in. but more about that tomorrow.

best wishes and good night. thanks for reading.

hi tara.
i take my film to rite aid because it's the closest place where i can drop it off. of course, they send it out, and it takes over a week for me to get it back, which is frustrating. i always have them scan them onto a disc for me as i don't have a scanner. i would love to learn to develop my own film though.

My husband shoots with film. He has lots to say about it. He is wanting his own darkroom so badly. We are hoping we can facilitate that in 2010 - I will show him your blog and he can write you directly.

I used his old canon ae-1 and shot some black and white - I liked it; I tried colour - I was very disappointed with my efforts.

I am feeling a bit ambivalent about film; my big focus this year will be to learn to use my camera on the manual setting.

i miss the 'magic' of film - that breathless, surprised feeling when you open the pack and find that one very special shot that just explodes onto your senses. my problem is that it was very expensive to have those with 3 to 4 out of 20 on a roll. film is a tactile thing for me. that being said, i love my digitals. it allows me to do so much more.

I'm also a digital photographer very much in the amateur camp. I've fantasized about shooting with film. I have an old FM10. Every time I imagine shooting with film I just freeze. I've loved your film shots. Maybe for Christmas I'll buy myself some film. Also, do you think it's a bit cheap to just take the film to a drug store to be developed?

I've been reading your blog for a while now and occasionally commenting. I started a blog of my own this week.

Hi. I have been reading your blog now for a couple of weeks and I really, really enjoy it. I am not sure even how I stumbled on it, but I am awfully glad I did. Your posts are very real, and soothing too. Your photos and words just seem peaceful and calm.
I think I also like this blog because it is about subjects near and dear to my heart--children, homemaking, food, photos and the ruminations of day to day living.

This post spoke to me because I started my blog for the very same reasons you spoke of and feel like the same thing has happened to me--that love of taking pictures. I have only had a digital camera for about a year and a half and I love it. I do miss film though. It was too much $$$ for me to spend though. Especially now when I take 50 pics a day (or more!)

Anyway, in this, the longest comment EVER, I just wanted to say that your blog brightens my day and I like to read it. Thank you for sharing your little corner of the world.
